Easy and Wholesome Vietnamese Tofu and Chives Soup | Canh Hẹ Đậu Hũ Thịt Bằm Recipe

Course Soup



  • 1 lbs. Ground Pork
  • 1 tbsp Mushroom Seasoning
  • 1 tbsp Sugar
  • ½ tsp Fish Sauce
  • 1/4 tsp Black Pepper
  • ½ tsp Kosher Salt


  • 2 tsp Oil
  • 1 tbsp Minced Garlic
  • 2 Shallots - Sliced
  • 8 cups Water
  • 1 tbsp Fish Sauce
  • 1 tsp Sugar
  • 1 Package of Tofu – soft or firm depending on your preference
  • 1 bunch Garlic Chive


  • Add mushroom seasoning, coarse salt, sugar, black pepper and fish sauce to the ground pork. Mix thoroughly.
  • Set meat aside to marinade for about 30 minutes.
  • Cut the chives into 1.5-2 inches in length. Set aside.
  • Cut the tofu into small cubes.
  • Once meat has marinated, let’s start making the soup by sautéing the shallots of a few minutes.
  • Add the minced garlic and cook a few more minutes.
  • Add ground pork; break it up and brown it on all sides. You don’t have to cook it all the way through at this time as it will cook some more after water has been added.
  • Once meat has nicely browned, add 8 cups of water. Scrap of all the bits and pieces of the bottom of the pot.
  • Season the broth with fish sauce and sugar.
  • Add chives and tofu.
  • Let it come to a light boil and it is ready to be served!
